I asked what the recoupment column meant and was told it was standard, which I later learned is a word that does most of the work in this business. What followed took four years to understand and about ten minutes to agree to. I am writing it down here in the order it happened, because when I tried to explain it to someone at the time I kept starting in the middle, and nobody could follow it. The detail that mattered was never the number at the top of the page. It was the definition of the word "net", which appeared in a schedule nobody walked me through, and which quietly moved the point at which I would ever see anything from the record I had spent a year making.
